Speedo cable lube
With the cooler weather I noticed the speedometer cable is noisy on my 53 Special.The noise seems to be up near the speedometer head.I assume I can loosen the cable from the back of the speedometer and insert some kind of oil or lube. With your needle nose pliers, pull that cable out a couple inches. It should pull with light resistance. Try to push it back in. If all that goes well, pull the cable out of the case. Coat the cable with grease or lubriplate and reinstall.Test the speedometer cable by driving the vehicle. Use the correct tools if you need to remove an old cable from a housing for the purpose of lubricating it. Disconnect the end cap from the speedometer gauge and the (screw-on) end cap from the gear box or transmission housing.Hang the cable and drip it till it comes out the other end. You can do the same with the drive unit. Just remove it and lube it really good. The dri-slide is a liquid with graphite in it, after you drip it into what ever you're working on, the carrier liquid evaporates leaving a coating of graphite behind.

You can load it up through the entire length of the cable unless you decide to re-route the cable and skip the angle drive, then you have to keep the lube away from the speedo head because it will foul it up. A foot back is OK in that case.Same issue would occur there, 25-30 year old lube in between the wire/jacket would thicken and the cable would bind up and release over and over making the speedo oscillate ±5-10 mph. Very annoying. The shade-tree fix was to pull the cable and hang it up vertically.…
