The deaths were a bit excessive and ill thought out in some cases, but I think he did a good job showing the X-men in their darkest hour before the Dawn of X.Mutants need to be introduced as truly dangerous. The world has embraced enhanced individuals. Mutants need to have an “other” factor; a bogeyman element that makes people scared.
