My impression is that several systems work together and a problem in one system can cause another to misbehave also. My solution has been to buy an inexpensive reader tool and keep it in the car so if a problem shows it's self I can read it on the road and reset it as needed. Bad gas could be the cause. I would check the air filter to make sure it's ok and that nothing found a home in the airbox or intake. I would be looking at the air mass sensor. OK..so I spoke to a local independent shop about my situation. VTM light, bad PCM, etc. The independent shop said that if I buy a used VTM for an early 2004 Pilot, it will have a hard coded VIN in the PCM. It will then throw check engine light codes. He also said I have an 80% chance of the transmission going bad (I do have a new tranny noise ...Then, this week, temp outside reached -25 and once again, the Pilot wouldn't start. Last night, after testing the battery at 12.4V after a short run of 10 minutes, I decided to replace the battery with a brand new one. Have it checked with a scanner. The VTM-4 light could indicate that the all wheel drive is disabled due to the misfire. Ran a code reader and confirmed to be O2 sensor with codes P2254 and P0154 (bank2 sensor1).while driving all three lights i.e. vtm-4, vsa and engine came on. no problems to the car while driving.
